    Very informative article Jill. Regarding the irrigation techniques, I have always found the best success with a timer-controlled drip system, watering deep into the roots at at night time.

    Wood sucks water. We cover the wood with plastic, before filling up the raised bed with earth and compost. In this way the wood doesn't take the humidity from the raised bed. We cover with mowed grass and dried leaves (a mixture) and we don't need to water much at all. Just another thing to think about, if you want to garden without too much effort. :)
